Well I am awaiting my DNB theory results of exam held in Dec 2007. This yr its getting exceptionally late.
What I have come to know from few earlier Seniors who gave the practical exam is that U require to be very Meticulous and thorrow in ur approach. It can't be taken forgranted like college MD exam where pass percentage is ~90%.
Soo will like few other Senior person to throw light on this matter.

Well Dr Mukarrab has told u almost all the things in detail. I think U r doing ur DNB from Himachal Pradesh, isn't it? Dont worry about MRI training, the places as per me in order of sequence are : 1. Nanavati MRI centre Mumbai 2. NIMS Hyderabad 3. Madurai
It will be easy for you to get observership if U would have cleared ur Theory exam of DNB. Well as per me in June DNB, they ask more questions from the previous year Dec DNB Theory. In fact I am sure U must be going thru last 3to5 yr question papers. Remember every year in exams its a known fact that U cant answer all questions. U can have a safe margin even if U were not able to answer upto 5 questions out of 40. But that doesn't means that U should leave them. Attempt all questions whatsoever U know about it. Draw diagrams and TIME DIVISION is very important. Remember all questions carry 10 marks. Soo dont stretch an6y answer extra long. Flow chart type answers are good way. I am myself waiting for my theory results of the exam which happened in Dec 2007.But this is what the strategy I had followed as adviced by my seniors. Just be cool and relax properly. Things will take a smooth course. More I will be able to guide you once the results come out as positive for me. Then I can assure that the strategy which I followed and my seniors followed works. Yes..I belong to Himachal Pradesh... we have two medical colleges here.. I finished my MBBS from IGMC Shimla in 2003 n then joined DNB at DRPGMC Tanda in 05..its a place close to Dharamshala which is abode to the tibetean leader Dalai Lama who is making a lot of news these days...we have snow covered mighty Dhauladhar ranges (lesser Himalayas) in the backdrop n this place is really serene..I'm finishing my stipulated training next month.. our institute has only recently acquired a 1.5 T MR, 16-slice CT and a high end colour doppler system.. but i was a little unlucky in a way that with exams coming up i couldnt get myself well at ease with these modalities.. So I was a little curious about going to some good place for training in these modalities and then return to this very institute for senior residency.. But all depends on how i fair in the exams.. Havent really studied that well.. there were very little academics in my institute.. but i have no one to blame when deep down i know where i faultered... as far as going to some big city is concerned i'm a little apprehensive about the locum jobs that may be available to meet up the basic needs.. Dr Mukarrab did come up with some great ideas for me but I would preferably like to go to Bombay and spend some good six months there.. your advice is always a boon to aspirants like me sir so keep posting...Take care...!!
I went back to UTTARANCHAL/HP by the perfect description of urs as regards Geography is concerned. Well I was there in DehraDun for 1yr in 2005. Lovely place and I still cherish the memories of that place. Anyways coming back to the topic of ineterest. U need not worry dat U have not studied. everyone goes thru such phase and its a positive sign that U think U ought had studied bit more. Thats d spirit ,the hunger of study must be there. Remember its only last 6 weeks which count. U will have to accelerate from May 1st. Just be clear in ur mind and study at good pace wid more emphasis to remember then to understand. Frankly for theory u dont require understanding(this is what I feel). Well I can very well understand ur situation as I had 2yr gap from 2004 to 2006 after my DMRD and then went for DNB in 2006. Soo I think U will be in better position then me as regards preparation is concerned. Just TWO things: 1. Dont think U r underprepared ,never ever compare wid other. U r more worthy then others. 2.Have the yearning for more study wid proper rest.
Regarding ur training, I told U it wont be problem at all. Once U give ur theory, then for a month or Two You can get thru the basics of High end machines from ur home centre(i.e. ur place of DNB training) Many centres are not havin what ur hospital has got now and many who had them also dont know too much. Soo frankly speaking U r not at loss. Ur DNB theory preparation in d meantime will help U for making ur basic foundation for Ur exposure to these high end machines. Soo just keep d good work of ur theory preparation going on and I am sure U will emerge in d same way as of today Kolkata Knight Riders are coming against Bangalore .

Hi Dr. Ramesh my name is avinash..i'm doing dnb in radiology in bihar in a cancer hospital named Mahavir cancer sansthan..In a matter of two months i'll be in second year of my training..i'm reading Grainger,osborn,berry & chesney as basic books & reading Haaga as a reference book only..my department has all the modalities except mri..i really feel low in confidence when i go to national conferences thinking tha all the other students must be knowing far far better than me due to their exposure in mri though they send us somewhere outside for mri training for about one month in final year..we do have our intra-departmental academic sessions once in a week..sir pls advice me about how i can prepare well for my dnb exam in june 2009..is extensive mri exposure so essential to pass dnb exam..sir pls guide me in that @ tell me how can i uplift my sinking confidence?
Well I am surprised why U r feeling left out type and kinda low in confidence????
Man trust me, U are lucky in the sense that U have all the modalities except MRI. Its not a big deal friend. I know many centres for DNB training which even dont have Spiral CTs and Color doppler, sooo U should not worry at all about exposure of MRI. And also remember one thing, nobody in the residency period gets enough exposure to learn MRI. Everyone goes for Residency after there PG courses for Good exposure in MRI.So that MRI issue which U r having is in fact not an issue at all. The corporate hospitals/ famous hospitals which have MRI, they dont allow there PG students to report. Maximum the students can watch the images. Its as good as U r looking an image on Internet. sooo there is no loss for U as regards ur concern for MRI training is considered. Now the second aspect of ur querry EXTENSIVE MRI exposure for DNB clearance??? Well I am still waiting for my result so will tell U better after the result but bottom line is NO, no extensive training is required.The questions which are asked in Recent advances section that U have to Mug up, nobody understands the physics. U have to just remember it and vomit on the examination day on the paper. thats all. No extensive training. well the fact is the questions they ask for Recent MRI, I can bet 90% of the senior consultants too, will find it difficult to write in 3 hour time. Soo just relax and have the papers of last 5 yr and see all the questions. Almost all answers U can get from Manorama Berry series and few datas from Internet.
Ur book selection is quite good but if U wish I will just want few modification. Well if U r reading Grainger and Berry then by now U must have understood that Berry series has SHAMELESSLY copied from Grainger. Soo if possible in place of Grainger just concentrate on Berry. Berry book seems easy but is difficult to retain. U have to raed it around 5 times to get gud grasp. Also almost all chapter of berry series is like question. Its really a gud book for DNB theory but dont rely on its data. the datas U can check from Grainger. Along with berry, I will advice U to have SUTTON, Not for total study but just for Images wid there caption. Sutton has better relevant images then Grainger. Graingers table are very good. U can mark the pages of grainger which has tables relevant for exam questions. Osborn Neuro is BEST. Haaga as reference is really fantastic. In physics just add Christensens for MR physics and Selmann for dark room. Although darkroom procedure is better given in TECHNICIANS Book i.e. Bhargava and LC Gupta. May be ur hospital technicians may be havin it. Just have a look in it.
There are few more sites and references which I will me giving U in the next mail. And just dont think dat U r at centre which has left U deprived of an important modality. As I have told U earlier, in fact U r in better situation then many others. For MRI Physics I will suggest U MRI made easy by Govind Chavan(its a must, very nice book of around Rs 400 ) and MRI step by step of Scherring publication. This Scherring publication is theer as CD format and also as print. U c there if U can manage or else if possible ,I will send U as an attachment. But I am not sure whether it will get attached wid mail.
Thats all for U dude ryt now. Just charge up and start ur fine moves. Ur exam is still quite far off but not dat far off also. In the mean time finish Ur thesis also as early as possible. And do take guidance/help of ur institutions seniors. They will also help U.

And I have no idea about how to approach the national board for thesis evaluation and we have to pay some 2500 bugs for thesis evaluation..the national board site doesnt mention about these issues either nor do they mention about the demand draft details.. they aren't taking the phone calls also.. its such a pathetic board.. can i do clear frcr as i do mdrd? or i had contact with frcr dept about plab exams for mdrd candidates appearing for frcr. it was convincing that mdrd candidates appearing for frcr no need to appear for plab exams.
but in frcr step 2b exams, is held after 3 yrs completing step 2a exams. is that same for mdrd candidates appearing for frcr?

What I have come to know from few earlier Seniors who gave the practical exam is that U require to be very Meticulous and thorrow in ur approach. It can't be taken forgranted like college MD exam where pass percentage is ~90%.

Well Dr Mukarrab has told u almost all the things in detail. I think U r doing ur DNB from Himachal Pradesh, isn't it?
Dont worry about MRI training, the places as per me in order of sequence are :
1. Nanavati MRI centre Mumbai
2. NIMS Hyderabad
3. Madurai
It will be easy for you to get observership if U would have cleared ur Theory exam of DNB.
Well as per me in June DNB, they ask more questions from the previous year Dec DNB Theory. In fact I am sure U must be going thru last 3to5 yr question papers.
Remember every year in exams its a known fact that U cant answer all questions. U can have a safe margin even if U were not able to answer upto 5 questions out of 40. But that doesn't means that U should leave them. Attempt all questions whatsoever U know about it. Draw diagrams and TIME DIVISION is very important. Remember all questions carry 10 marks. Soo dont stretch an6y answer extra long. Flow chart type answers are good way.
I am myself waiting for my theory results of the exam which happened in Dec 2007.But this is what the strategy I had followed as adviced by my seniors.
Just be cool and relax properly. Things will take a smooth course. More I will be able to guide you once the results come out as positive for me. Then I can assure that the strategy which I followed and my seniors followed works.

Yes..I belong to Himachal Pradesh... we have two medical colleges here.. I finished my MBBS from IGMC Shimla in 2003 n then joined DNB at DRPGMC Tanda in 05..its a place close to Dharamshala which is abode to the tibetean leader Dalai Lama who is making a lot of news these days...we have snow covered mighty Dhauladhar ranges (lesser Himalayas) in the backdrop n this place is really serene..I'm finishing my stipulated training next month.. our institute has only recently acquired a 1.5 T MR, 16-slice CT and a high end colour doppler system.. but i was a little unlucky in a way that with exams coming up i couldnt get myself well at ease with these modalities.. So I was a little curious about going to some good place for training in these modalities and then return to this very institute for senior residency.. But all depends on how i fair in the exams.. Havent really studied that well.. there were very little academics in my institute.. but i have no one to blame when deep down i know where i faultered... as far as going to some big city is concerned i'm a little apprehensive about the locum jobs that may be available to meet up the basic needs.. Dr Mukarrab did come up with some great ideas for me but I would preferably like to go to Bombay and spend some good six months there.. your advice is always a boon to aspirants like me sir so keep posting...Take care...!!

I went back to UTTARANCHAL/HP by the perfect description of urs as regards Geography is concerned. Well I was there in DehraDun for 1yr in 2005. Lovely place and I still cherish the memories of that place.
Anyways coming back to the topic of ineterest. U need not worry dat U have not studied. everyone goes thru such phase and its a positive sign that U think U ought had studied bit more. Thats d spirit ,the hunger of study must be there.
Remember its only last 6 weeks which count. U will have to accelerate from May 1st. Just be clear in ur mind and study at good pace wid more emphasis to remember then to understand. Frankly for theory u dont require understanding(this is what I feel). Well I can very well understand ur situation as I had 2yr gap from 2004 to 2006 after my DMRD and then went for DNB in 2006. Soo I think U will be in better position then me as regards preparation is concerned. Just TWO things:
1. Dont think U r underprepared ,never ever compare wid other. U r more worthy then others.
2.Have the yearning for more study wid proper rest.
Regarding ur training, I told U it wont be problem at all. Once U give ur theory, then for a month or Two You can get thru the basics of High end machines from ur home centre(i.e. ur place of DNB training) Many centres are not havin what ur hospital has got now and many who had them also dont know too much. Soo frankly speaking U r not at loss.
Ur DNB theory preparation in d meantime will help U for making ur basic foundation for Ur exposure to these high end machines.
Soo just keep d good work of ur theory preparation going on and I am sure U will emerge in d same way as of today Kolkata Knight Riders are coming against Bangalore .
I will update U soon wid few more gud tips. Just waiting for my results. If they are positive, Then I assure U ;U will definitely get thru it. Its a promise.

my name is avinash..i'm doing dnb in radiology in bihar in a cancer hospital named Mahavir cancer sansthan..In a matter of two months i'll be in second year of my training..i'm reading Grainger,osborn,berry & chesney as basic books & reading Haaga as a reference book only..my department has all the modalities except mri..i really feel low in confidence when i go to national conferences thinking tha all the other students must be knowing far far better than me due to their exposure in mri though they send us somewhere outside for mri training for about one month in final year..we do have our intra-departmental academic sessions once in a week..sir pls advice me about how i can prepare well for my dnb exam in june 2009..is extensive mri exposure so essential to pass dnb exam..sir pls guide me in that @ tell me how can i uplift my sinking confidence?

Well I am surprised why U r feeling left out type and kinda low in confidence????
Man trust me, U are lucky in the sense that U have all the modalities except MRI. Its not a big deal friend. I know many centres for DNB training which even dont have Spiral CTs and Color doppler, sooo U should not worry at all about exposure of MRI.
And also remember one thing, nobody in the residency period gets enough exposure to learn MRI. Everyone goes for Residency after there PG courses for Good exposure in MRI.So that MRI issue which U r having is in fact not an issue at all.
The corporate hospitals/ famous hospitals which have MRI, they dont allow there PG students to report. Maximum the students can watch the images. Its as good as U r looking an image on Internet. sooo there is no loss for U as regards ur concern for MRI training is considered.
Now the second aspect of ur querry EXTENSIVE MRI exposure for DNB clearance??? Well I am still waiting for my result so will tell U better after the result but bottom line is NO, no extensive training is required.The questions which are asked in Recent advances section that U have to Mug up, nobody understands the physics. U have to just remember it and vomit on the examination day on the paper. thats all. No extensive training. well the fact is the questions they ask for Recent MRI, I can bet 90% of the senior consultants too, will find it difficult to write in 3 hour time. Soo just relax and have the papers of last 5 yr and see all the questions. Almost all answers U can get from Manorama Berry series and few datas from Internet.
Ur book selection is quite good but if U wish I will just want few modification. Well if U r reading Grainger and Berry then by now U must have understood that Berry series has SHAMELESSLY copied from Grainger. Soo if possible in place of Grainger just concentrate on Berry. Berry book seems easy but is difficult to retain. U have to raed it around 5 times to get gud grasp. Also almost all chapter of berry series is like question. Its really a gud book for DNB theory but dont rely on its data. the datas U can check from Grainger. Along with berry, I will advice U to have SUTTON, Not for total study but just for Images wid there caption. Sutton has better relevant images then Grainger. Graingers table are very good. U can mark the pages of grainger which has tables relevant for exam questions.
Osborn Neuro is BEST. Haaga as reference is really fantastic. In physics just add Christensens for MR physics and Selmann for dark room. Although darkroom procedure is better given in TECHNICIANS Book i.e. Bhargava and LC Gupta. May be ur hospital technicians may be havin it. Just have a look in it.
There are few more sites and references which I will me giving U in the next mail. And just dont think dat U r at centre which has left U deprived of an important modality. As I have told U earlier, in fact U r in better situation then many others. For MRI Physics I will suggest U MRI made easy by Govind Chavan(its a must, very nice book of around Rs 400 ) and MRI step by step of Scherring publication. This Scherring publication is theer as CD format and also as print. U c there if U can manage or else if possible ,I will send U as an attachment. But I am not sure whether it will get attached wid mail.
Thats all for U dude ryt now. Just charge up and start ur fine moves. Ur exam is still quite far off but not dat far off also. In the mean time finish Ur thesis also as early as possible.
